Dictim is now called Whitby.
The site was thought to be a signal station and also a Roman road station. Because Whitby was between Goldsborough and Ravenscar which could not see each other it is assumed that there was a signal station at Whitby to bridge this gap.
To the North East the Romans collected Jet which they polished and used as jewelery. The Jet from Whitby was said to be of the finest quality.
