Stanegate was a Roman road that ran from Corstopitum (Corbridge) in the east, situated on Dere Street, to Luguvalium (Carlisle) in the west.
Stanegatewas different to many Roman roads in that it wasnt totally straight and often followed gradients to avoid steep inclines.
